Volos and Larissa are two medium sized cities located in the Greek region of Thessaly. Thessaly decided that Volos and Larissa should develop into a so-called dipole, a small metropolitan urban region. It is expected that the combined weight of Volos and Larissa (240.000 inhabitants) makes it easier to attract investments, subsidies, innovations or events. The combined candidature for hosting the Mediterranean Games in 2013 is a first sign of such a successful cooperation.

More and more people will travel the fifty kilometer distance between the two cities. Clever solutions to accomodate the growing traffic between Volos and Larissa will become a vital condition for a sustainable development of the dipole.
